From each experi- mental replicate, 3 samples (2 to 3 ind. sample –1 ) were analysed and a mean amount of N. spumigena DNA ind. –1 was estimated. Nitrogen, iron, and silica are widely considered to be the most important nutrients that limit phytoplankton growth in the world's oceans. Though clearly important in lakes, the role of phosphorus has been largely ignored in the ocean.

Abstract: Nodularia spumigena is a toxic, filamentous cyanobacterium occurring in brackish waters worldwide, yet forms extensive recurrent blooms in the Baltic Sea. N. spumigena produces several classes of non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs) that are active against several key metabolic enzymes. Nodularia spumigena strains NSOR10 and NSGG-1 lost heterocysts when cultures were supplemented with ammonium and therefore DNA from filaments comprised solely of vegetative cells could be subjected to PCR.

Baltic Sea water amended with 0.3µmoll−1 PO 4 every week Abstract. The object of this work was to determine, using a full-factorial experiment, the influence of temperature, irradiance and salinity on growth and hepatotoxin production by Nodularia spumigena, isolated from Lake Alexandrina in the south-east of South Australia.Higher levels of biomass (determined as particulate organic carbon, POC), toxin production and intracellular toxin Nodularia spumigena is a bloom-forming, filamentous and N2-fixing cyanobacterium from the Nostocales order. This species occurs in many brackish waters worldwide, but most extensive blooms are reported in estuaries, lagoons and inland waters of Australia and New Zealand [1–3], and the Nodularia spumigena potentially toxic species, forming heavy blooms and producing nodularin; occurrence - summer; filaments 8-12 µm wide, cells 3-4 times shorter than wide.
